Introduction

Ghana node use to receive direct sponsorships from International Sciences Programme (ISP), Uppsala University, Sweden but now through African Spectral Imaging Network (AFSIN), which come in the form of workshops and donation of equipment for the laboratory. It also use to receive sponsorships from the External Activities of the International Centre for Thereotical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy in a form of stipends for students and equipment for the laboratory through TWAS.

Research Activities

Our research interest focuses on optics, photonics, imaging and spectroscopy with application into tropical disease diagnostics such as malaria, herbal plants characterization, ocular and vision science research, food science research and environmental science research such as water quality assessment. We are always interested in interdisciplinary collaborations and in establishing long – term suitable research as the node collaborates with other institutions both locally and internationally to enhance its research activities. Notable research activities includes:

  • Remote sensing of atmospheric air pollutants in industrial areas (such as in Tema, Ghana) using DOAS
  • Tunable Diode Laser Gas Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS)
  • Design and Development of low-cost imaging and spectroscopic systems
  • Multispectral imaging and digital imaging processing in Biomedical, Biology, Agricultural samples
  • Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy
  • Optical Speckle Interferometry imaging
  • Optical Spectroscopic studies of plants (anti-malarial herbal and others), Ocular tissues and food samples
  • Application of Nano-technology and fabrication of prototype filters for drinking water purification
