Research Activities

The activities of the Mali research group are undertaken within the Laboratory of optics spectroscopy and atmospheric science (LOSSA) which is supporting by the International Science Programme (ISP) and the African Spectral Imaging Network (AFSIN). The research activities are focused on the application of optics and spectroscopy in agricultural, medical and environmental sciences. The program aims to strengthen the research capacities of the group in order to enhance knowledge in agriculture systems, medical science and environment monitoring which are the keys domains for sustainable development in Mali.
The program consists of building capacity in basic and applied sciences by training both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the sub-mentioned areas.

The activities of the group consist of the following major research topics:

Spectroscopy and Microscopy based Quality control analyses

  • Applying spectroscopy and microscopy imaging methods for the quality control analyses:
  • Agricultural soils properties,
  • Fruits quality and maturity
  • Medicine drugs
  • Plants stress
  • Drinking water quality
  • River water pollution

Land-atmosphere flux exchange and Climate modeling

  • In-situ measurement by infrared gas analyzer for both CO2 and H2O emitted from various ecosystems.
  • Surface Heat Exchange and Gas Fluxes analyses using Eddy covariance systems
  • Soils carbon sequestration (in-situ measurement, satellite products, models simulations)
  • Modeling climate systems at regional and local scale

Environmental Monitoring

  • Application of passive DOAS remote sensing in monitoring atmospheric trace gas
  • Analyses of aerosols
  • Analyses of nutrients from biomass burning
  • Indoor and outdoor monitoring of air pollution
  • Assessment of environmental impact of agriculture, energy and forestry.
  • Environmental modeling of Epidemic

Agricultural Systems Analyses

  • Irrigation project identification, design and operation
  • Optimizing crop growth and ensuring quality
  • Agricultural rain and irrigation water management
  • Crop modeling
